The City of a Saint & Good Herbs

Yerba Buena de la Republica de Alta California (a.k.a San Francisco)

Today, you might be familiar with this city by a few of its popular nicknames, including:

  • San Fran
  • Frisco
  • City by the Bay
  • SF
  • Fog City

Of course, we all call it “San Francisco“!

Formerly known as Yerba Buena (Spanish for “Good Herb”), the City by the Bay — originally founded and established in Mexico — was captured by the Americans during the Mexican-American War of 1846 – 1848. Yerba Buena was renamed “San Francisco”, after the Mission San Francisco de Asís in 1847. The city is the namesake of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Italy.

After its defeat in 1848, Mexico ceded the territory of California to the United States. This territory would later become the 31st state of the Union in September 1850.

Yerba Buena, today, is California’s fourth largest city, in population, and also — to me — one of the most beautiful cities on the planet.
