SEATTLE FACTOID #3
Seattle is the only major U.S. city that is situated on an isthmus.
An isthmus is a narrow strip of land located in between two large bodies of water. In Seattle’s example, it is situated between the Puget Sound and Lake Washington. These two bodies of water are connected via the Lake Washington Ship Canal, a man-made thoroughfare for boats constructed between 1911 and 1934.
To keep the factoid trivia going for another minute, the only American state capital city located on an isthmus is Madison, Wisconsin, situated between Lakes Monona and Mendota. (It’s also the birthplace of the author of this blog — just to throw it out there).
