Seattle Welcomes the Year 2020. - 🐧 Happy New Year and Best Wishes for 2020, everyone. Even though Seattle's New Year's fireworks celebration was canceled due to high winds above the Space Needle (much to the widespread disappointment and brutal consternation of people who had come to see the show), I was still able to come away with this gem. This was *literally* one of three firecrackers that ignited during the first or second minute after midnight, and then the show was over. You can actually see the direction of the winds by the trails of the firecracker here (to the north). Initially, the show had been delayed until 2am (which really angered a lot of people), and when that time came (yes, I stayed and waited because that's how I do as a photographer on a mission), it was canceled altogether. Regardless, I really like how this one came out. I came way with something to document the occasion. "Notre-Dame de Paris Reviendra" / "Our Lady of Paris Will Return" - 🇨🇵 Enjoy a cityscape of Paris which prominently features La Cathédrale de Notre-Dame de Paris (The Cathedral of Our Lady of Paris). Not only is she one of the most popular landmarks in the city, but she is also one of the most recognizable landmarks on Earth. The Cathedral took nearly two centuries to build and has been in existence for nearly a millennium! In April, Notre-Dame encountered a terrible tragedy which emotionally affected millions of people around the world. French President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to restore and reopen Notre-Dame to the world in five years' time. - 🇨🇵 My latest blog article poses a question about the lovely people of Paris (Les Parisiens). "Two Minutes in Paris" On my first or second evening in the French capital, I remember a brief encounter with a beautiful girl. - 💋 I was in a Metro subway station waiting for my train. When the train going in the opposite direction arrived, I noticed its design was very futuristic with huge windows so you could see all the passengers sitting or standing within it. It was as though all the train's carriages were transparent. Through the window, two women were seated right across from where I stood, directly in my line of sight - 💋 The one who caught my eye was either lip-synching or singing a song she clearly loved. She was jamming like a pop star on stage. She had the most beautiful, long, flowing hair. She was gorgeous. Her friend just looked at her and smiled at me with an awkward look that translated to say, “OK, my friend is crazy!" - 💋 I saw them both and laughed, and then our eyes met, and she knew I was laughing at her rocking out. She laughed, flashed me a big smile, and then continued to sing and dance from her seat, completely unembarrassed. While she grooved, she looked at me again, and winked. I decided to entertain her by dancing on the platform of the subway (as people walked around me) so she would know I was enjoying her performance. Music was playing through my iPod, so it wasn't an effort. Granted, I was wearing sandals and my backpack was full of camera gear, but I didn’t care. I was momentarily entranced by this girl. - 💋 The whole exchange was probably for two minutes, and then the train started to move. As the ladies waved at me as they departed, I waved back. My temporary crush blew me a kiss as the train disappeared through the tunnel. "An Emerald City Underneath an Amethyst Sky" - 🐧 This is an older cityscape featuring Seattle's Waterfront at dusk. If you're a resident of Seattle, you can tell it's old because of the light trails on the viaduct that wind through the image. As of July 2019, approximately 90% of the viaduct has been demolished. It truly no longer exists and is now a part of Seattle's history while a brand new two-mile tunnel runs underneath downtown in the viaduct's place. Admittedly, the Waterfront looks a lot more spacious and grand as a result. The Waterfront, in its current state, will take another four years to be completley renovated and redesigned. "Treading the Temper of a Tempest" - ⛈ - Enjoy a riveting scene of an oncoming duel between City and Nature. This is my favorite cityscape of Seattle thus far in 2019. I enjoy visualizing the potential clash of inclement weather upon what appears to be the invincible, towering structures of a major city. "New Day, New York" - Enjoy this early morning view of the Lower Manhattan skyline, taken shortly before sunrise at Exchange Place in Jersey City, New Jersey. Some of the best views of Lower Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan can be enjoyed from New Jersey. It is certainly worth the commute. I used to live only five blocks away from this spot. While watching the boats sail up and down along the Hudson River in the late evenings, with few people around, I always found the waterfront at Exchange Place to be a calm haven of reflective introspection. It is one of my favorite spots in the NYC metropolitan area. The statue is the Katyn Memorial, in observation of the horrendous massacre of Polish citizens that took place in Russia during World War II. On the front side of the memorial, there is also a rectangular plaque observing the devastating loss of life that took place on September 11, 2001. One humorous note: Before cell phones took over the populace, it was considered “long distance” to call NYC from Jersey City. "Brooklyn Rising" - I would be beyond remiss if I continued to present cityscapes of NYC and exclude Brooklyn. Yes! Believe it or not, though Manhattan is the most renowned borough of America's largest city, Brooklyn has the largest population out of the five boroughs. That means the majority of New Yorkers live in BROOKLYN! As a result, I must share this significant part of the city with you. - 📸 Due to several revisions in Brooklyn's zoning regulations for construction in the past two decades, skyscrapers have risen exponentially in downtown Brooklyn, giving the neighborhood its own unique skyline across the East River from Lower Manhattan (the same applies to Long Island City in Queens)...and it continues to rise! 🗽"Forever NYC" 🗽 - 📸 Enjoy a view of the Downtown NYC (Lower Manhattan) skyline and Brooklyn Bridge as seen from the Manhattan Bridge over the East River at twilight. (It was soooooo frigid the night this was captured. Given the bridge's design, it's difficult to position a tripod -- or to use it at all -- to obtain the shot as you need to be strategic or clever in where your camera will rest as subway trains and endless traffic traverse, causing the bridge railings on the pedestrian walkway to vibrate ad nauseam. Some of the best views of Lower Manhattan and Midtown Manhattan can be enjoyed from New Jersey. It is certainly worth the commute. I used to live only five blocks away from this spot. While watching the boats sail up and down along the Hudson River in the late evenings, with few people around, I always found the waterfront at Exchange Place to be a calm haven of reflective introspection. It is one of my favorite spots in the NYC metropolitan area. The statue is the Katyn Memorial, in observation of the horrendous massacre of Polish citizens that took place in Russia during World War II. On the front side of the memorial, there is also a rectangular plaque observing the devastating loss of life that took place on September 11, 2001. One humorous note: Before cell phones took over the populace, it was considered “long distance” to call NYC from Jersey City. "Brooklyn Rising" - I would be beyond remiss if I continued to present cityscapes of NYC and exclude Brooklyn. Yes! Believe it or not, though Manhattan is the most renowned borough of America's largest city, Brooklyn has the largest population out of the five boroughs. That means the majority of New Yorkers live in BROOKLYN! As a result, I must share this significant part of the city with you. - 📸 Due to several revisions in Brooklyn's zoning regulations for construction in the past two decades, skyscrapers have risen exponentially in downtown Brooklyn, giving the neighborhood its own unique skyline across the East River from Lower Manhattan (the same applies to Long Island City in Queens)...and it continues to rise! 🗽"Forever NYC" 🗽 - 📸 Enjoy a view of the Downtown NYC (Lower Manhattan) skyline and Brooklyn Bridge as seen from the Manhattan Bridge over the East River at twilight. (It was soooooo frigid the night this was captured. Given the bridge's design, it's difficult to position a tripod -- or to use it at all -- to obtain the shot as you need to be strategic or clever in where your camera will rest as subway trains and endless traffic traverse, causing the bridge railings on the pedestrian walkway to vibrate ad nauseam.
